剛生產(chǎn)出的瀝青混合料，由于瀝青完全裹附于石料表面，通常整體上呈黑色，鋪筑后大粒徑骨料與細(xì)集料粘結(jié)充分，影響光的反射，所以人們?cè)谝曈X感受上發(fā)烏，沒有光澤。經(jīng)過一段時(shí)間后，大粒徑骨料表面的細(xì)集料被車輪摩擦和水沖刷失去，大骨料表面變得光滑，反光效果增強(qiáng)，人們感覺路面烏黑油亮。再經(jīng)過一段時(shí)間之后，由于水分、氧氣、紫外線等因素會(huì)發(fā)生瀝青的老化，骨料表面瀝青被摩擦脫落，石料本身顏色顯露，加上大量灰塵聚集在路面，瀝青路面整體上看上去呈灰白色。

瀝青混凝土主要是由瀝青、石料、礦粉等材料，按照一定的配比在嚴(yán)格的控制條件下加工而成。瀝青的顏色決定了瀝青路面的顏色，但對(duì)普通瀝青路面使用中的顏色漸變差異不明顯。石料部分通常的比重在90%以上，所以對(duì)各地區(qū)普通瀝青路面在老化后出現(xiàn)的顏色差異，影響較大。
